๐Ÿ„ Sprite Fright ๐Ÿ„

General / 01 February 2021

So I haven't really shared much in the last year. I am going to change that!

It's time to share more of the developments and insights of the current Blender Open Movie Project "Sprite Fright"!
Much has been going on and I'd love to give a short tour through some of my work on the characters that was going on in the past 6 months :)

If you already want WIPs, files, making-of's and more insights check out on the Blender Cloud and subscribe to support us and Blender development in general :3

Also credit for most of the things I'm showing also goes to other members of the team like Andy Goralczyk, Vivien Lulkowski, Simon Thommes, Demeter Dzadik and Pablo Furnier.

SculptJanuary 2020 Plans

General / 04 January 2020

So ... change of plans. I did prepare for fully joining the SculptJanuary this year to complete 31 topics once again.
Let's just say I didn't really feel inspired enough in the end and my plan kinda didn't add up. At the same time I felt much more intensely about finally finishing up the timelapse videos from last year and uploading them to my YouTube channel.

Here's a little trailer/intro to the playlist:

Showing all timelapses in a row shows off the challenge I put myself in last year: Always sculpting one topics from the last one.
One more reason to finally show this off :)

I intent to upload 1 video per day throughout the current SculptJanuary, with the first 2 already being online + Day 10 from months ago:

Apart from this I will also participate for a handful of topics for the current SculptJanuary but with a bit more effort and time invested in each one than last year.
I also intend to use the new recordings that come from that for new tutorials in the Speed Sculpting Workshop since I still have plenty of ideas to cover ^^

Have fun sculpting everyone and I'll be back soon with more :)

My Decade in Review

General / 01 January 2020
I saw others post an #artdecade collage so let's join in ^^

Looking back at the past decade it's crazy how much has happened and how easily it could've gone otherwise.
These years didn't just teach me a lot professionally but also developed my social skills & character tremendously!
I found out who I wanted to be and how I can do it :D

During the last years of school in 2010/11 I discovered 3D art for myself and kept dabbling in it out of curiosity. But without the 1 year internship at KUBUS Creative in 2012/2013 I don't think I would've pursued it as much as I did.
My boss Remi actively supported that early spark and offered me time, resources and motivation to work on 3D art.
After that my sister Celia and some co-students of her involved me in some short film projects at her university.
This was years before I would've studied myself and I can't express how helpful these early experiences were!

In 2014 when it came to looking for place to study, my portfolio at the time instead landed me an apprenticeship at SEHSUCHTย
(Back then still called LIGA 01).
In those 3 years I got my first real work experiences in advertisement and film production by working with and being taught by professionals who had many years of experience already on their belt.
During that time I also continued to reach out to other people, artists and joined in more collaborative projects.
These years were some of my most active and motivated and they were incredibly challenging but also very rewarding.

After all of this I seemed to have made enough of a splash in the Blender community that Ton Roosendaal emailed me with a job offer.
Since the end of 2017 I've been working at Blender, my first official job, with all the feelings of impostor syndrome that come with it :Dย
I finished a short film project in which I had the an amazing (and frightening) amount of agency and responsibility.
This position also lead into more time spend in short film production, tutorials, courses, public talks & presentations and so much more than I thought I would do.
Not much longer than a month ago I was giving a presentation and demo at DreamWorks which still boggles my mind.

All this makes me already anxious about the coming decade and all the surprises it has in store for me and so soo thankful to all the people that made this possible by believing in me and supporting me! <3

I wish you all a Happy New Year/Decade and all the best!

Let's start SculptJanuary 2020

General / 31 December 2019
It's that time of the year again!
Tomorrow the SculptJanuary 2020 and my 5th go at the challenge will begin.
I did prepare my new rendering & recording setup.ย Here's a look at my previous entries!
Check out more info on the challenge over here!

It's also not meant as a facebook exclusive thing anymore so feel free to join in on any art & social media platform!

There will be regular posts on what's going on during the challenge on Facebook, Twitterย & Instagram.

Here's a look at the topics for this year:

This year the rules are loosened up a lot more and the random winners for prizes have been removed.
I also cannot recommend this section from the website enough:

For anyone interested in participating this year, these tips can help you in finishing the whole month of sculpting.
In the 4 years I joined I only finished 2 because 2017/2018 were far too ambitious and exhausting.
I lost all of my free time and my wrist started hurting badly and those were the moments I just had to stop myself!

Sculpting daily for an entire month is quite an intense challenge so try not to shoot for the stars and watch out for your health!

I'm also spending a bit of time right now on the render setup for my entries of this year and my sculpting & recording setup overall.
Here's a little preview of what I'm going for ^^

In comparission to the setup from last year:

I'll be back soon by posting my first entries.
Happy new year everybody!

Stylized Character Workflow - Blender 2.8 Tutorial

General / 20 December 2019

I think I should post more blog updates here! :D

Since my detailed character creation course on the Blender Cloud is progressings slowly I wanted to give at least a somewhat complete version before the year ends.
So I created a ~30 min long YouTube version that covers my entire production workflow for stylized charatcers in Blender 2.81.
This video covers all 3D related steps from the early sculpting to the final asset and render.

More information on the character on the artwork:
https://www.artstation.com/artwork/mqgz4eย

Apart from this I am prepping for the upcoming SculptJanuary again for my time past work and there's a new Blender Open Movie in the works so there's plenty of exiting stuff coming.
Hope you are having happy holidays and I'll be back soon :)

Rain: Final file uploads

General / 28 August 2019

Finally here are the last WIP files about the character creation of Rain!
As always there's more detailed descriptions and the files on the Blender Cloud :)

Here are the original rough poses and the final polished one to the right. All of these were first made with a rough rigify rig with automatic weights and then converted to ShapeKeys (Blendshapes) with additional sculpting on top to fix deformation issues and create the expression.

I also uploaded 2 more .blend files about the texturing/shading workflow/setup and the pose exploration for the final presentation.

I also created a few bonus tutorials for the course and one of them is freely available and also added to the Blender Fundamentals YouTube series:

Now that I have all the renders and screenshots together I will upload this character as an artwork to my profile.Hopefully soon there's also going to be te next chapter of the character creation course that this character is made for.
Stay tuned!

Rain: Outfits & Expression tests

Making Of / 10 August 2019

Forgot to post an update on Rain last week!
I continued to upload the individual project files of the character creation onto the Blender Cloud until the first batch of tutorials is ready.
I'm almost done now and will release them real soon! :D
Here's a look at the new stuff. More on the Blender Cloud!

First off I uploaded the .blend file for the individual steps of creating the body sculpt and all existing cloth layers and the mix between them to find the best outfit.

After that I cleaned up the expression tests a bit more. Here are all the final ones side by side:

You can find the .blend file on the Cloud as well with the original, refined & final (asymmetrical) sculpts. I also included some annotation layers for guide-lines on what I did for each expression and simplified versions of the important facial muscles.

Next up I'll hopefully post about the first chapter of tutorials being released!
See ya soon :D

Some Followers & Drawings

General / 28 July 2019
Hey there!
I've been reaching some milestones lately! I especially didn't expect the 10k followers THIS SOON on Instagram. Thx a lot folks <3ย

This one is a fan art to Wanda from Bojack Horseman S2. Had this on my ToDo list for a while.

I also want to do and share some drawing & paintings a lot more in the future since I've been getting very rusty with itย ๐Ÿ˜…

This one is made with Grease Pencil in Blender 2.8. Odd choice, I know but I'm just a big fan of the edit & sculpt modes for GP as well as some animation features!
It still is a bit buggy to use and has a pretty complex interface but nothing that can't improve in the future.
I'm probably gonna get more into Krita or PS when it comes to digital painting.

Rain: Original Head Sculpt

Making Of / 25 July 2019

In the following weeks while finishing the Blender 2.8 Character Course I will upload the individual stages of the character creation.
Here's the first one with the original head sculpt of Rain:

I also went ahead and uploaded screenshots of the original variations of the head sculpt to find the final design, as well as the .blend file containing all the sculpted meshes.

Check them out on the Blender Cloud if you are interested:

More on the body sculpt and the original outfits soon!
Cheers!
